Sound Designer

My passion for Techno music is what inspired me to become a sound designer. This has since influenced the way I approach other genres of music as well. The techniques which make my music unique, harness a concept called Spectromorphology. Using this philosophy I analyse the frequency content of sound like the notes on a scale, to layer digital synthesis and field recordings with live performance.

I have studied the work of Pierre Schaeffer, founder of the art movement Musique Concrète. He was interested in the unique situation created by radio broadcasts and recordings. By looping tape he explored our perception of sound in a context with no visual representation. By removing subject from object in this way I enjoy using modern software to analyse and combine the spectral qualities of recorded samples, before processing them to create entirely new sound effects for the Dark Age Audio library.

Mix Engineer

With an MA Degree: Innovation in Sound, I can produce audio content to a professional standard. Achieving a balanced mix requires a trained ear and experience using effects like compression. With careful application, the dynamic range of a record can be altered, so all elements can be heard clearly across a range of different speakers and mobile devices.

Are you a talented Songwriter who would like a great sounding demo? Are you a DJ who wants to hear their original mix sounding full of energy in the club? Or perhaps you’re a film-maker who needs that soundtrack to feel three-dimensional and epic?

Whatever your needs I am ready to mix your tracks and make them sound their very best, ready for all media platforms.

Live Events

Bristol’s music culture is like no other in the UK. The community here love to gather around a great sound system! With over 10 years experience as a sound engineer & promoter for nightclubs & regional theatre companies, I possess an inherent need to make sound happen.

Using impulse response technology, I can adapt and tune any speaker system to both fit and sound great in different venue spaces. As well as setting up stage rigging & lighting to bring production value to your event. Shown here at our Panorama rooftop party at the Clifton Observatory in 2019.

Field Recording

Is the art of patience.

There is no better place to find sound than out in the real world. I often carry a portable recorder with me so that I can stop and capture the ambiance of a unique place or the audible texture of different materials.

It is important to observe, listen and try to tap into the tuning of the world. Once you learn how to do this, it becomes possible to predict what might happen ahead of time. So you can be ready to capture the sound as a bird cries out or an express train rushes by!

The organic soundscape is a never ending story. In post-production a captured moment in time can become profoundly special, just like framing a painting or mounting a photograph.

Assets Librarian

Working with high fidelity audio has taught me to be precise and organised. Even the most modern computer systems can rapidly fill up with large media files. Using the Universal Category System (UCS), an open source file naming convention. I label and organise my creative assets into concepts, which make them easy to locate during my sound design sessions. This also allows me to quickly pull together sample packs to share with artists and studios I am collaborating with.
